SummerSlam is headed to the Dawg Pound.
One of WWE's biggest premium live events will be held in Cleveland, with SummerSlam 2024 taking place at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Aug. 3, USA TODAY Sports confirms.
This year's edition of SummerSlam will center around a full weekend for WWE in the Cleveland, with "Friday Night Smackdown" taking place at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Aug. 2 in addition to several other events the company plans to hold in the area leading up to the pay-per-view.
"The city of Cleveland and WWE have a rich history that spans decades," WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque said in a statement. "We are excited to bring SummerSlam, SmackDown and a full slate of events to town in partnership with Haslam Sports Group and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission."
WWE SummerSlam recent history
This year's SummerSlam will be the 34th edition of the event, but first time it will be held in the city of Cleveland since August 1996. It will be the first time any WWE event will be held in Cleveland Browns Stadium.
"We are thrilled for the opportunity to host WWE this August, as it further strengthens Cleveland's growing reputation as a premier city to host major events in the U.S.," President and CEO of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission David Gilbert said. "This year’s SummerSlam is expected to be the largest WWE event ever hosted in Ohio and will bring significant economic impact to our community as it highlights Cleveland’s vibrant downtown, authentic experiences and exciting attractions."
One of the bigger pay-per-views outside of WrestleMania, the event has expanded in its venues in recent years from arenas to large stadiums, with now the last four editions of SummerSlam being held in NFL stadiums since the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in SummerSlam 2020 taking place in the WWE ThunderDome.
- SummerSlam 2021: Allegiant Stadium (Las Vegas Raiders)
- SummerSlam 2022: Nissan Stadium (Tennessee Titans)
- SummerSlam 2023: Ford Field (Detroit Lions)
- SummerSlam 2024: Cleveland Browns Stadium (Cleveland Browns)
Moving to SummerSlam to bigger venues has been a success for WWE; the 2023 show, which featured Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso in Tribal Combat for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship as the main event, set a gate record for any non-WrestleMania even with $8.5 million and it was the most-watched SummerSlam in company history, according to WWE. The gate record would be broken by the 2024 Royal Rumble in January.
